USF Men's Soccer Eliminated by Penn State in NCAA Tournament

State College, PA...The University of South Florida men's soccer team (15-7), which made its third appearance in the second round of the NCAA's, unfortunately fell victim to a 1-0 triple-overtime defeat at the hands of the Penn State Nittany Lions (13-4-1). Joe Zewe tallied the lone goal for the Nittany Lions in the 133rd minute. Troy Perkins (Worthington, OH/Thomas Worthington) posted a season-high 12 saves in the contest. PSU will now advance to the third round to face St. John's on December 2. The loss prevents USF from achieving the most wins in a season, as it fell short by two wins.

In swampy conditions at Jeffery Field, both teams battled to a 0-0 tie after 45 minutes of play, before a sparse crowd. The first shot of the game came with 27 minutes remaining in the half courtesy of PSU. Troy Perkins, USF's keeper, easily dismissed it though for his one and only save of the half.

South Florida's defense held the Nittany Lions to just three shots. Brian Mullins (Centerville, OH/Centerville) fired a header just wide with a minute remaining for the Bulls best scoring chance. Mullins also came up with a huge team save to maintain the 0-0 tie.

Despite improving conditions for the second stanza, neither team could dent the twine, setting up an overtime contest. Perkins came up with four strong saves for the Bulls while offensive chances increased on both sides. The match also began to develop a physical tempo with several fouls and cards on both sides. Joe Valencia (Largo, FL/Largo) provided stellar defensive play
for USF in the half.

Another period needed, as 0-0 tie goes 105 minutes, with offense becoming the name of the game. USF defense continued to play strong, setting up the second extra period. Perkins delivered several incredible saves for USF in the period.

Yet another 15 minutes needed, as sunshine finally fell on Jeffery Field over the last 20 minutes, improving the conditions. Chances in the second overtime were limited while Perkins continued to stand on his head in goal.

Heartbreaker was delivered in the 133rd minute, as Joe Zewe, assisted by Derek Potteiger, hit a bouncer just under the crossbar, and over Perkins hands. The loss dropped Perkins record to 14-7 on the season.

With the loss coach Hackworth, goes to 47-32-2 in four seasons at USF. Jason Cudjoe (Ft. Lauderdale, FL/Nova) and Jeff Thwaites (Odessa, FL/Gaither finished the season with 10 goals each. Thwaites led the team in overall scoring with 26 points, as he added six assists to his 10 goals. The Bulls only lost three seniors this year, so potential looms for next season.
