UAB's Emery, Ewels Advance To Semifinals At South Carolina Invite

COLUMBIA, S.C. ----- UAB men's tennis players Alex Emery and Tyrone Ewels each won a pair of singles matches here Saturday to advance to the semifinal round of the A/B division at the South Carolina Fall Invitational. More than 200 players representing 36 schools are playing in the three-day event hosted by the University of South Carolina at four different Columbia tennis venues. Emery, a sophomore rallied to defeat Guy David of Charleston Southern, 3-6, 6-3, 7-5, in the Round of 16 before ousting Paul Bishop of Armstrong Atlantic State in the quarters in another three-setter, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3. Ewels, a freshman from South Africa, continued his impressive play this fall, as he won twice to reach Sunday's semifinals. He downed Ruan Olivier of Presbyterian, 6-3, 7-5, before disposing of Henrik Willers of Lander by a 7-6 (5), 6-1 score. In Sunday's semifinals, Ewels will go against Alex Petropolous of Auburn while Emery faces Jack Roux of South Carolina-Upstate. Senior Adrian Tollstam lost his quarterfinal round match Saturday to Renzo Airaldi of South Carolina-Upstate, 6-0, 6-2.
