Game 3: No. 7 Houston 57, No. 10 UTEP 40
March 2, 2006
Tye Jackson registered her third career double-double en route to helping No. 7 Houston defeat No. 10 UTEP, 57-40, in game three of the Conference USA Women's Basketball Championship presented by Aeropostale at Moody Coliseum on Thursday. Jackson finished the contest with 17 points and equaled her career-high with 11 rebounds. The victory sets up a quarterfinal contest with city-rival Rice on Friday for the Cougars.
The 40 points were a season-low allowed by the Cougars, who held UTEP to just 23.8 percent shooting from the floor. The Cougars did not fare much better from the field making 26.6 percent of their shots. The big difference came at the free throw line where UTEP made just 3-of-13 attempts, while the Cougars connected on 21-of-28 attempts.
"It always looks better when the ball is going in the basket", Houston head coach Joe Curl said. "Despite our 27 percent shooting effort, our kids had their hearts in it. That's the type of contribution a coach asks for. I was pleased with our efforts. I think tonight was one of our best mental efforts of the season."
After leading 27-22 at the break, Houston opened the second half on a 12-2 run to put the game out of reach. The Cougars kept their lead in double figures the rest of the way. Nakazi Glover scored 13 of the Cougars' 30 points in the second half. Glover ended up with 17 points. Forward Emily Fryters grabbed a career-high 15 rebounds, including nine on the offensive end.
Ingrid Goslin came off the UTEP bench to record a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Goslin had 12 of the Miners' 18 points in the second half. Jackson scored 11 of her points in the first half as she connected on five of the Cougars' eight field goals.
