TULSA, Okla. - In game one of the 2007 Conference USA Women's Basketball Championship at the Donald W. Reynolds Center on the campus of the University of Tulsa, No. 9 Houston used a strong second half and 43 points from Tye Jackson to grab an upset victory over No. 8 Marshall, 71-58. Jackson recorded the third 40-point game in UH history and the 43 points are a new single-game championship record. The Cougars (9-18) had two other double-digit scorers in addition to Jackson. Whitney James contributed 13 points and 10 rebounds while two-sport athlete Sunshine Misa-Uli chipped in with 10. As a team, Houston shot 70 percent (28-40) from the free throw line. The 40 attempts tied for the second most in tournament history.
Her point total is also the third-best single-game mark all-time in C-USA. She was 11-25 from the field, 3-7 from behind the arc and 18-23 from the free-throw line. Both her free throws made and attempted tied the all-time league records and are school and championship records. Marshall (15-15) was led by Modupe Ishola with 12 points and six rebounds. Meg Withrow also registered double figures with 11 points. KaSwawna Curry led the Herd with eight rebounds in the loss. The teams played a close first half with Marshall leading at intermission, 24-23. Jackson scored 15 of Houston's 23 points in the first stanza. The Cougars came out on fire in the second half to take control of the game. Misa-Uli scored on back-to-back layups and Jackson hit two 3-pointers to spark a 17-4 run that gave UH a 40-28 led at the first media timeout. After the timeout, Houston kept rolling and out-scored the Herd 8-2 to begin the half on a 24-6 spurt. With the win, Houston advances to play top-seeded Tulane at 1:00 p.m. on Friday.
