TULSA, Okla. - Friday's second quarterfinal game of the 2007 Conference USA Women's Basketball Championship saw fourth-seeded Rice defeat No. 5 UTEP, 56-46. The contest was a back and forth affair as the lead changed hands on 12 occasions and the teams were tied nine times. All-Conference USA first-team member Lauren Neaves of Rice led all scorers with 20 points. Rice held a slim 24-21 lead at intermission, powered by Neaves' 14 first half points on 5-for-10 shooting from the floor and a 4-for-6 performance from the line. Her efforts helped the Owls overcome a five-point deficit with 6:20 remaining in the first half. UTEP's Shalana Taylor nailed a 3-pointer to tie the game at the beginning of the second half and the teams traded leads until Rice jumped ahead for good on a Krystal Frazier free throw with 4:30 remaining. The Owls were able to pull away after hitting 9-of-10 free throws down the stretch. Neaves was joined in double-digits by Valeriya Berezhynska who tallied 13 points and eight rebounds. Kadie Riverin and Frazier both just missed hitting double-figures, scoring nine points each. UTEP was led by Ana Valtierra's double-double of 11 points and 10 rebounds. Freshman of the Year Jareica Hughes also tallied 11 points and added four rebounds, two assists and a steal. Tasha Marisett chipped in with seven points and 10 rebounds. With the win, the Owls advance to the championship semifinals for the second consecutive year and will play No. 1 seed Tulane on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. The contest will be televised LIVE by CSTV.
