In Friday's quarterfinal action at the 2005 Pepsi Conference USA Women’s Basketball Tournament in Charlotte, N.C., DePaul, TCU, Houston and Louisville, the top four seeds have advanced to Saturday's semifinal round for just the third time in tournament history. In the last quarterfinal game of the day, No. 2 Louisville defeated No. 7 Marquette 69-54. Katie Olson came off the bench to score a career-high 20 points and grab six rebounds to lead the Cardinals. Freshman Yuliya Tokova added 15 points for U of L. Christina Quaye led Marquette with 23 points, including 15 in the second half.
In the first game of today's evening session, Sancho Lyttle scored 18 of her game-high 31 points in the second half and overtime as Houston erased a 13-point halftime deficit to defeat Charlotte, 75-73. Sakellie Daniels led Charlotte with 21 points. Houston, the defending tournament champion, advances to tomorrow's semifinals to play the winner of the Marquette-Louisville game which is next.
In quarterfinal No. 2, TCU advanced to the semifinals for the fourth straight year with 65-57 win over USF. C-USA Player of the Year Sandora Irvin had 18 points, 12 rebounds and seven blocked shots (one shy of her own tournament record) to lead the Frogs. Jessica Dickson had 15 points for the Bulls, who have won a school record 20 games as they seek their first NCAA bid. In the first game of the day, No. 1 seed DePaul defeated Memphis, 78-55. Khara Smith hit 11-of-14 shots from the field and finished with 23 points and 15 rebounds to lead the Blue Demons into Saturday's semifinals. Victoria Crawford topped the Tigers with 16 points.
All games will be played at Dale Halton Arena and game times are Eastern.
Saturday’s semifinal games will be televised on the C-USA TV Network. Please check your local listings. The C-USA Championship game on Sunday, March 6, will be broadcasted on ESPN2, beginning at 5 p.m. (EST).
