In the second semifinal match-up of the day, No. 2 Louisville held off a late rally by No. 3 Houston to defeat the Cougars 56-48 and reach the finals of the 2005 Pepsi C-USA Women's Basketball Tournament for the first time since 1998. First-team All-C-USA pick Jazz Covington led the Cardinals with 16 points, while reserve forward Katie Olson stepped up big for the Cardinals once again finishing with 13 points. Sancho Lyttle fueled the Houston comeback attempt by scoring 16 of her game-high 22 points after the break. The Cardinals will face No. 4 TCU, who upset top-seeded DePaul 87-77 in the first semifinal, in the finals set for 5 p.m. EST tip Sunday on ESPN2.
Saturday's first semifinal offered up just the second upset of the tournament as fourth-seeded TCU sent top-seed DePaul home with an 87-77 victory at the Pepsi C-USA Women's Basketball Tournament.
Five Horned Frogs scored double figures as TCU pulled away late in the contest to preserve the double-digit victory. C-USA Player of the Year Sandora Irvin finished as the game’s high scorer with 24 points and she had 13 boards. She broke the school’s single-season record for rebounds for the fourth season in a row in the process. Her season totals with TCU have been 294, 320, 366 and now 374.
DePaul saw four of its players reach double digits in the scoring column. Leading the pack was Dant with 22 followed by Smith with 19. Smith also had 11 rebounds to lead DePaul. Allie Quigley recorded 15 points and Jenna Rubino tossed in 14 and six boards.
All games will be played at Dale Halton Arena and game times are Eastern.
The C-USA Championship game on Sunday, March 6, will be broadcasted on ESPN2, beginning at 5 p.m. (EST).
