UAB womenıs basketball senior Katie Billue has been named one of 10 semifinalists for the third annual Collegiate Basketball Award of Excellence presented by Creamland Dairies, who sponsors the award, according to an announcement by the Albuquerque Convention and Visitors Bureau.
Billue, who just completed her eligibility with the Blazers, currently has a 4.0 GPA as a double major in operations management (business) and psychology. She is also active in various campus organizations, with memberships in Beta Gamma Sigma, Psi Chi, Phi Kappa Phi and Golden Key International. She was also selected to represent UAB's School of Business at the semi-annual Beta Gamma Sigma National Leadership Conference in October, 2004. Billue received the Conference USA Commissioner Honor Roll Award for academics three times and has been on UAB's Presidentıs Honor Roll for nine semesters.
On the court, Billue started 26 games as a senior and was one of three Blazers to play in all 28 games during the season. She also set 18 career highs during 2004-05, including career-high averages of 4.9 points and 3.8 rebounds per game. Billue, the lone senior on this yearıs squad, was UAB's third-best shooter, connecting on 34.8 percent of her shots.
The Guntersville, Ala., native has also lent her time to 16 various volunteer activities while at UAB.
"Not only is Katie Billue the consummate citizen and an outstanding student, she epitomizes everything you could ask for from an athlete," said UAB head coach Audra Smith. "After spending her first three years at UAB under one coaching staff, she was faced with adapting to an entirely new staff and philosophy for her senior year. Every day she gives us her all. While Katie may not post All-American numbers, night in and night out she plays 35 minutes. She gives UAB Women's Basketball everything she has every time she steps on the court."
The award honors college seniors for their athletic and academic achievement as well as their community involvement. Three finalists for the collegiate awards will be named during the NCAA basketball tournaments and will be presented on April 12, 2005 in Albuquerque, N.M.
