IRVING, Texas - After a tight and hard-fought Conference USA women's basketball season, four of the top six honors have been distributed. After wrapping up an outstanding first season, UAB guard Jala Harris was named the Freshman and Sixth Player of the Year, while Brittany Carter of Memphis earned Newcomer of the Year after transferring from the University of Georgia. Capping off today's announcement is Defensive Player of the Year Larrissa Williams of Tulsa. Harris and Williams also appear on this year's All-Freshman and All-Defensive Teams.

C-USA Women's Basketball Awards

Harris earns double honors after making her way into the C-USA record books. The Madison, Ala., native broke the league's freshman single-game scoring record when she netted 40 points at Marshall on Jan. 30. She became the third player in conference history to do so and is one of three Division I freshmen to have reached this mark in 2009-10. Harris' 16.4 points per game has her ranked No. 3 in the Mideast Region and 11th in the NCAA among the freshmen class. The C-USA Sixth Player of the Year comes off the bench to lead the Blazers' and rank fifth in the league in points per game (16.4). The 5-6 guard also tops the club in assists with a 3.2 average, 10th-best in C-USA. In addition, Harris picked up five C-USA Freshman of the Week accolades this season, the most in league history. UAB is the No. 6 seed in the 2010 GMC Sierra C-USA Women's Basketball Championship and will face host Tulsa in a 6 p.m. CT first-round bout Monday, March 8.

Joining Harris on the All-Freshman Team is Tulsa's Taleya Mayberry, Olivia Grayson of Tulane, Memphis' Nicole Dickson and Anete Steinberga for UTEP.

In her first year of competition with C-USA and Memphis, Carter made an immediate impact. The 5-9 guard tallied 49 points against Sacramento State on Nov. 27, setting both a C-USA and Memphis (men's or women's) single game scoring record. Her mark also ranks second in NCAA DI women's basketball for most points per game this season. The Covington, Ga., native is the 13th Tiger to score 500-or-more points in a single season. Carter sits atop the league's leader board in scoring, averaging 18.4 PPG. Memphis finished 10-6 in league play and captured the No. 4 seed to earn a first-round bye. They will await the winner of the East Carolina-Southern Miss matchup scheduled for 2:30 p.m. CT Monday.

Williams was a force both offensively and defensively for the Golden Hurricane this season. The 6-3 forward ranks second in Tulsa's record books with 1,501 points, 960 rebounds, and 205 blocked shots, figures that also rank 24th, seventh and sixth, respectively, among C-USA's all-time greats. Williams leads the conference and ranks 17th nationally in blocked shots with 2.4 per game, while her effort on the paint has her fifth with 9.1 RPG. She has started 103 of 117 games for Tulsa and owns 43 career double-doubles, seventh most in league history. Williams looks to continue entertaining her home crowd as the Golden Hurricane play hostess to this year's Championship.

Memphis also placed Lonlack Ramses on the All-Defensive team as well as Tulane's Chassity Brown, East Carolina's Ashley Clarke and Houston's Courtney Taylor.

Williams, Carter and Taylor were also named to the All-C-USA first team that was announced Saturday, while Harris, Brown and Clarke picked up second team merits.

The C-USA Women's Basketball Championship begins Monday, March 8 inside the Donald W. Reynolds Center on the campus of The University of Tulsa. The quarterfinal games are on Tuesday with semifinal games scheduled for Wednesday and championship play on Friday.
