UAB's Milling Relieved of Coaching Duties
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --- Jeannie Milling has been relieved of her position as head women's basketball coach at UAB, the school announced Wednesday.
The announcement by athletics director Watson Brown comes on the heels of a 9-19 season, the third consecutive losing campaign for UAB.
Milling, who has been the Lady Blazers' coach for 17 seasons, compiled a record of 265-230 at UAB during that time. She guided UAB to postseason play on five occasions, including a pair of NCAA Tournament appearances.
The 1999-2000 Lady Blazer team reached the NCAA Sweet 16 in the program's best season. Since a 21-13 record in 2000, UAB has gone just 29-57 the past three seasons overall and registered a mark of only 11-31 in Conference USA play.
UAB averaged 20 wins per season over a four-year span in the early 1990s, but the Lady Blazers have encountered losing seasons in five of the past seven years.
"We want to thank Coach Milling for her work and the contributions she has made to the women's basketball program during her time here and to UAB athletics as a whole," said Brown. "We will begin immediately our efforts to hire the best qualified candidate as our next women's basketball coach."
UAB's 2004 season ended last Thursday with a 64-54 first round loss to Memphis in the C-USA Tournament.
