AP Names UAB's Deanna Jackson All-American
The A.P. team is selected by a vote of media from throughout the country.
Jackson received 65 votes and two first-team votes. She was one vote away
from earning second team honors, behind Vanderbilts Chantelle Anderson.
This is the third All-American team that has honored Jackson. She was
selected first team by CollegeHoops.com and second team by Womens
Basketball Journal.
Jackson, from Brewton, Alabama, led UAB to an 18-10 overall record and third
place finish in Conference USA. The Blazers host Florida International,
Friday night at 7:00 p.m. in the first round of the Womens NIT.
The Conference USA Player of the Year, Jackson is second in the nation in
scoring, averaging 25.1 points per game and sixth in rebounding, pulling
down 11.8 boards per game. She also led Conference USA in three-point
percentage, making 40.6 percent of her shots from behind the arc.
In the Conference USA Tournament against Cincinnati, Jackson recorded the
50th double-double of her career and the 19th this season. She scored 30 or
more points eight times this season and 20 or more 21 times in the 27 games.
She is third on both UABs all-time scoring and rebounding lists. She has
1,782 points (20.4 per game), and 956 rebounds (10.8 per game). She also
holds the school record for blocked shots in a career with 110.
Notre Dames Ruth Riley was a unanimous choice for first team. In addition
to Riley was Southwest Missouri States Jackie Stiles, Purdues Katie
Douglas, Georgias Kelly Miller and Oklahomas Stacey Daies.
On the second team were Svetlana Abrosimova of Connecticut, LaToya Thomas of
Mississippi State, Tennessees Tamika Catchings, LSUs Marie Ferninand and
Anderson
Joining Jackson on the third team were Iowa States Angie Welle,
Connecticuts Sue Bird, Georgia Schweitzer of Duke and Niele Ivey of Notre
Dame.
