UC's Valerie King Named Recipient of the Ed Steitz Three-Point Award

CINCINNATI, Ohio-- Cincinnati sophomore Valerie King has been named the recipient of the 2002 Edward S. Steitz Three-Point Award as the most outstanding women's three-point shooter in the nation by the Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Mass.

King, a native of Washington Court House, Ohio, and an All-Conference USA first team selection this past season, made 101-of-235 (.430) three pointers during the recently-concluded season to set a UC single-season school record. She has 163 career three pointers which to rank second on the career list. She had tied th school record with six three-pointers in three different games this year while making five or more eight times and four or more 16 times.

King averaged 19.8 points a game to lead Cincinnati in scoring, helping the Bearcats to a school record 27-5 mark.

The Steitz Award is named after the late Dr. Edward S. Steitz, who is considered the “father” of the college basketball three-point shot. He was the longtime athletic director at Springfield College and was responsible for various rule changes. The award is presented annually to the male and female players with the highest three-point shooting percentage with no less than an average of 3.0 three-pointers made per game.

Wright State’s Cain Doliboa won the award on the men’s side.
