Charlotte's Amanda Butler Promoted To Associate Head Coach
CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Charlotte 49ers women's basketball team's Amanda Butler has been named associate head coach, head coach Katie Meier announced today. Butler has spent the last two seasons at Charlotte as an assistant coach.
"I am both honored and flattered by my new role with the team," Butler said. "There is so much excitement and enthusiasm surrounding the Charlotte program. We had a great season this past year, but there is still a lot of work to do. I'm excited about our future and being a part of it."
This season with Butler's help, the 49ers won the Conference USA regular-season title and earned the team its first NCAA Tournament bid ever. The team set records for conference wins in a season with 12. Their 21 wins were to most for the program since winning 23 in 1990-91. Charlotte had two players earn All-Conference USA notice, including Peaches Harris, who was also the league's Sixth Player of the Year. The 49ers' filled three of the five spots on C-USA's all-freshman team.
"I'm very pleased to announce this promotion," Meier said. "It reflects her contributions to the quick turnaround we've all shared with the program. I think Amanda is one of the top young coaches in the profession and it is an appropriate time to reward her with this title. We feel like she is valuable asset to the 49ers and are glad to have her remain a part of what we are doing."
Butler, a native of Mt. Juliet, Tenn., joined the Charlotte staff two years ago after serving four seasons as an assistant at Austin Peay. While there, she helped the Govs to the NCAA Tournament in 2001, when they won the Ohio Valley Conference championship. She began her coaching career with two seasons at Florida, her alma mater. As a player, she was a three-time academic All-SEC selection. She finished her career second on the Gators' career assists list and ranked among the top five in career three-pointers and three-point percentage.
