Tulane's Themann Selected As National Award Finalist

NEW ORLEANS, La. - - Tulane women's basketball player Britt Themann has been selected as one of three female finalists for the prestigious Walter Byers Scholarship, the NCAA announced on Thursday.

Given annually since 1988, the Byers scholarship is awarded each year to one male and one female student-athlete, regardless of division, in recognition of outstanding academic achievement. The two winners each receive a $21,500 scholarship from the NCAA. Nominees must be a graduating senior with a cumulative grade point average of 3.50 or better and have competed in intercollegiate athletics as a member of a varsity team.

Themann, a senior from Seattle, Wash., has been a leader for the Green Wave both on and off the court during her Tulane career. She ended her women's basketball career as the Green Wave's career leader in three-point field goal percentage, having connected on 38.6 percent of her three-point attempts. She also ranked third all-time in three-pointers made (174) and ranks fifth in career free throw percentage (.781).

In the classroom, Themann has been a three-time recipient of the Conference USA Commissioner's Academic Medal, indicative of having at least a 3.75 GPA, with a fourth award expected at the close of the spring semester. This season she was a first-team Verizon Academic All-District VI selection after having been a second team choice as a junior. She was also selected as Tulane's Student-Athlete of the Year in 2002.

"This is a terrific honor for Britt and one she definitely deserves," Tulane head basketball coach Lisa Stockton said. "She has worked extremely hard, both on the court and in the classroom, during her four years at Tulane and it is nice to see that effort recognized."

Themann was participate in an interview process during the last weekend in April in Key West, Fla., with the winners to be announced following.
