Young Named Most Valuable Player at Lady Pirates Basketball Annual Banquet

GREENVILLE, N.C. - Freshman guard Jasmine Young was named Most Valuable Player at the 2006 East Carolina women's basketball awards banquet on Thursday night in Harvey Hall located inside the Murphy Center. A native of Richmond, Va., Young enjoyed a stellar rookie campaign leading the team in assists (153), 3-point field goals (50) and minutes played (1097) which was a single-season school record. Young, who ranked 28th in the nation in assists per game (5.3), averaged a team second-best 13.0 ppg and was the only Lady Pirate to start all 29 games. In Conference USA, she ranked second in steals (2.69 spg), fourth in assists (5.28) and ninth in assist to turnover ratio (1.34). As a freshman, Young re-wrote the Pirate record books by moving into the school's single-season top-10 in three categories. At the conclusion of the season, she ranked fourth in 3-point field goals made (50), tied for fourth in steals (78) and tied for eighth in assists (153). She racked up on post-season honors in C-USA as she was named to the second-team, All-Freshman Team and became the first Lady Pirate to earn Freshman-of-the-Year honors with her Co-Freshman-of-the-Year selection. Young was also presented with the Coaches Award. Head coach Sharon Baldwin-Tener also passed out six other awards on the night. Junior Cherie Mills (Ayden, N.C.) received the Rebounding Award. Mills started all 29 games for the Pirates and led the team in both scoring (16.1 ppg) and rebounding (7.6 rpg). She finished her first season at ECU ranked among C-USA leaders in seven categories: third in scoring (16.1 ppg) and field goal percentage (.535), fifth in defensive rebounds per game (4.83), sixth in rebounding (7.6 rpg) and offensive rebounds per game (2.72 rpg), eighth in blocked shots (32) and 13th in free throw percentage (.739). The second-team All C-USA performer also ranks first in school history in field goal accuracy (.535). Sophomore Nicole Days (Burgaw, N.C.) received the Defensive Award. She played in all 29 games for the Pirates while making nine starts. Days, who has seen action in every game since arriving at ECU a season ago, averaged 3.3 points and 5.0 rebounds. She proved to be an inside force on the boards ranking third on the squad with 144 boards. Freshman Impris Manning was presented with the Deflection Award. She made 13 starts while playing in 28 of 29 games for the Pirates. The Thomasville, N.C. native averaged 5.2 points and 4.6 rebounds. Her first season at ECU saw her rank third on the squad in minutes played (743) and defensive rebounds (85). Among freshmen nationally, Manning ranked third in the nation in fewest turnovers per 40 minutes (2.21) and 24th in steals per game (1.54). For his service and dedication to the Lady Pirates, senior team manager David Stahl received the Sixth Man Award. In addition to the individual player recognitions, Baldwin-Tener presented senior plaques to Catherine Coley, LaToya Horton and Ebonee Downey. The Lady Pirates enjoyed their first winning season since 2000-01, finishing 17-12 and 8-8 in C-USA play. The squad advanced to their fourth straight C-USA Tournament and posted their first tournament win in C-USA after defeating UAB. 2006 East Carolina Women's Basketball Awards
