Charlotte Adds Darrick Gibbs To Women's Basketball Staff
CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Charlotte 49ers head women's basketball coach Katie Meier announced today the hiring of Darrick Gibbs as assistant coach. He replaces Nicole Erickson, who resigned last month after two seasons with the program.
"We are excited and fortunate to hire someone with as much experience as Darrick," Meier said. "He is someone who began his career at the grass roots level and is working his way up. He has lofty goals and is going about achieving them the right way. He's a great addition to the staff."
Gibbs joins the 49ers after two seasons at College of Charleston. His responsibilities included off-campus recruiting, planning practice, on-the-floor coaching, player development and scouting of opponents. He also coordinated team travel for the Cougars.
Prior to working at College of Charleston, Gibbs spent three seasons at Wofford, his alma mater. He was a student-assistant his first two seasons there and remained with the team for another season, upon graduation. While there, he assisted with scouting, development of both post and perimeter players and recruiting. He was also responsible for summer camps and the team's weight and conditioning programs. In addition to his experience as part of the Terriers' staff, he has been involved with men's and women's basketball camps and clinics throughout the southeast, including Tennessee, Virginia, Wake Forest, Tennessee Tech and Georgetown.
A native of Pawleys Island, S.C., Gibbs attended Waccamaw High School, where he was a two-year letterwinner. He received a B.S. degree in psychology from Wofford in May 2000.
"I am ecstatic about having an opportunity to work with Coach Meier," Gibbs said. "She is very well respected in the business and has brought a lot of excitement and enthusiasm to this program. Charlotte is a great city and the university has the support and resources needed to be very successful. I couldn't ask for a better situation."
Gibbs' hiring completes the Charlotte coaching staff. Last season, the 49ers emerged as one of the top teams in Conference USA, winning the league's regular-season title. The Niners finished the season with 21 wins, including a school record 12 wins in C-USA action, and earned their first berth ever in the NCAA Tournament.
