NEW ORLEANS - - The Tulane University women's basketball team wrapped up its 2009-10 season over two and a half months ago, but the honors continue to roll in for Green Wave rookie Olivia Grayson as the native of Metairie, La., was named Co-Outstanding Female Amateur Athlete in the Greater New Orleans Area by the Allstate Sugar Bowl and the Greater New Orleans Sports Hall of Fame.

Grayson shares the honor with Loyola women's basketball standout Trenese Smith, who completed her career last season as the Woldpacks' all-time leading scorer with 2,439 points. The award is based on achievements from the 2009 calendar year through May 2010 and is based on a vote by the Allstate Sugar Bowl Sports Awards Selection Committee, which is made up of local media members. Grayson and the other award winners will be honored at a special reception on Friday, July 23, in the Bienville Club Room of the Louisiana Superdome.

Grayson's award-winning campaign began as a senior at Archbishop Chapelle High School where she helped lead the Chipmunks to their first-ever state title. During the 2008-09 season, she averaged 13.8 points, 9.2 rebounds, 3.3 steals and 3.2 steals per game.

Along the way, Grayson was named 5A Most Valuable Player, first-team all-state and first-team All-District 10-5A. She finished her career as the school's all-time leading scorer with 2,180 points and averaged 16.2 points per game to go with 8.3 rebounds and 4.2 assists per contest.

She made an immediate impact on the Tulane program, scoring seven points, pulling down eight rebounds and handing out a career-best 10 assists in the 2009-10 season-opener against Louisiana Monroe on Nov. 13. For the season, Grayson led the team in free throw percentage (.744) while ranking second in assists (96), assists per game (2.9), rebounds (151) and rebounds per game (4.6). She also finished tied for second in blocks (14) and blocks per game (0.4), tied for third in minutes played (912) and minutes per game (27.6), fourth in steals (53) and steals per game (1.6), and fifth in total points (275) and points per game (8.3).

A member of the 2010 Conference USA All-Freshman Team, Grayson played in all 33 games with 17 starts and lined up at all five positions for the Green Wave at various points during the year. She scored in double digits 13 times, including a season-best 22 points at Rice on Feb. 25, and had five or more assists six times.

Grayson was named C-USA Freshman of the Week on Feb. 22 after averaging 9.0 points, 4.5 rebounds, 3.5 blocks, 2.5 assists and 2.0 steals per game while connecting on 7-of-13 shots from the field (.538).

A rising sophomore for 2010-11, Grayson is one of eight letterwinners expected to return following the Green Wave's C-USA regular-season and tournament championship season which saw Tulane advance to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2003. Joining Grayson the list of returning players are rising seniors Tiffany Aidoo, Roshaunda Barnes, Brittany Lindsey and Roshaunda Barnes, rising junior Brett Benzio, as well as rising sophomores Janique Kautsky and Tyria Snow.

In addition, Tulane will welcome redshirt-freshman Chantel McDonald - who sat out the 2009-10 season with a knee injury she suffered in high school - for the upcoming season, along with incoming freshmen Whitney Bibbins, Katye Magee, Rhea Nelson and Ashley Westby.
