Thieler Hired as Tulane's Women's Basketball Assistant Coach
The Tulane women's basketball program has hired local high school coach Christy Thieler as its newest assistant coach, Green Wave head coach Lisa Stockton announced Tuesday.
Thieler comes to Tulane after having spent the last six years as the head girl's basketball coach at St. Mary's Dominican High School in New
Orleans. She has also served as Dominican's Health and Physical Education Department Head since August of 2000.
"We are extremely excited to add someone of Christy's caliber to the Tulane women's basketball staff," Stockton said. "She has been one of the top girl's basketball coaches in the state of Louisiana for the last few years and I know that she will make quite an impact with the team."
While at Dominican, Thieler compiled a record of 148-54 (73.3 percent), averaging nearly 25 wins per year. She was chosen as the 1999 Metro Coach of the Year by the New Orleans Times-Picayune and led Dominican to the state championship game in 2002. Thieler's squads won the district title in both 1999 and 2000, earning her District Coach of the Year honors those years. She was also selected as the coach of the East All-Stars at the 2002 Louisiana High School Athletic Association All-Star game and was a member of the LHSAA All-Star Selection committee.
"I am thrilled to be joining the Tulane womens basketball program, "Thieler said. "This is a program that has obviously been extremely
successful both on the court and in the classroom over the last nine seasons. I am looking forward to helping improve upon a tremendous tradition of excellence."
Thieler has also been heavily involved in coaching in the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) ranks, working with the prestigious Kenner Angels
club team. While working with the Kenner Angels, she had the opportunity to coach current Green Wave players Lakethia Hampton and Natalie Walsh.
A 1994 graduate of the University of New Orleans, Thieler began her college career as a walk-on at LSU where she earned a scholarship before
transferring. A native New Orleanian, Thieler graduated from Dominican High School.
"Christy will do an outstanding job for us," Stockton said. "Her experience at the high school level will prove to be invaluable this coming season and we cant wait to get out on the court."
Tulane is coming off of a 19-10 season that saw the Green Wave earn its ninth consecutive bid into the NCAA Tournament. Tulane is one of just 11 schools nationally that have been in each of the last nine NCAA fields.
