Sept. 22, 2005

A total of 13 Conference USA women's basketball games will be televised nationally and regionally during the 2005-06 season as part of the league's television schedule, the C-USA office announced today. Included are four contests that will be televised on ESPN 2, as well as a nine-game package on CSTV. All 12 schools will make at least one national television appearance on one of the networks. In addition, a number of other games will be televised locally in C-USA markets.

This season marks the first year of C-USA's partnership with CSTV: College Sports Television. CSTV and Conference USA recently signed a six-year initial term that includes significant national and regional exposure for football, men's and women's basketball and other C-USA sports. CSTV, the fastest growing independent cable network, has agreements with distributors that serve more than 65 million households nationwide. It deals with the top six distributors - Comcast, DirecTV, Time Warner, Charter, Cox and Adelphia, among others - and is expected to be available on cable in all Conference USA markets soon.

Three regular-season games will be televised on ESPN 2. Tulane welcomes Tulsa on Sunday, January 8 for the first ESPN 2 match up of the season, although game time and location are subject to change due to the aftermath and devastation of Hurricane Katrina. The Green Wave look to youth this season as the lineup features only two upperclassmen, six sophomores and four rookies. Tulsa opens its inaugural season in C-USA with a new head coach Charlene Thomas-Swinson, who has 13 years of collegiate experience and three as an assistant coach in the WNBA. ESPN 2 will broadcast back-to-back weekend road trips of Rice, which is coming off of its most successful season in program history. The Owls, paced by junior forward Lauren Neaves, recorded the Western Athletic Conference championship and their second NCAA Tournament berth in 2004-05. Rice will travel to Houston to face the Cougars on Sunday, January 15, and SMU on Sunday, January 22.

ESPN will also broadcast the championship game of the 2006 C-USA Women's Basketball Championship on Sunday, March 5 from Moody Coliseum in Dallas, Texas. The four-day event will be hosted by first-year C-USA member SMU and the championship game winner receives the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

In addition, a total of nine contests will be carried regionally and nationally on the CSTV, including the semifinals of the C-USA Women's Basketball Championship.

During the opening week of regular season play, East Carolina travels to Birmingham to face UAB on Friday, Jan. 6 for the first CSTV women's basketball showcase. The two returning C-USA members stand 3-2 in the all-time series in the Pirates' favor. Last season, ECU secured its third consecutive postseason berth under the direction of Sharon Baldwin-Tener. The Blazers look to even the series as they return four starters and nine letterwinners from the 2004-05 squad.

The 2005-06 season will see the introduction of six new programs to Conference USA. Marshall University, Rice University, Southern Methodist University (SMU), the University of Tulsa, the University of Central Florida (UCF), and the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) will all begin competition in C-USA beginning with the 2005-06 season. These six schools will join East Carolina University, University of Houston, University of Memphis, University of Southern Mississippi (Southern Miss), Tulane University and the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB).
