IRVING, Texas -
Prior to the tip-off of the 2009-10 women's basketball season, Conference USA's Jareica Hughes of UTEP and UCF's Emma Cannon have received preseason honors by Full Court Press. The duo were named to the Mid-Major Preseason All-American second and third teams, respectively, by Full Court Press.
Alyssa Clark of Middle Tennessee State was named the Mid-Major Preseason Player of the Year. Clark, the nation's leading scorer a season ago, and Cannon will do battle in the season opener for both teams on Nov. 15 at MTSU.
Cannon, C-USA Preseason Player of the Year, averaged 15.5 points and 11.6 rebounds per game in 2008-09 while leading the Knights to the conference tournament title and a second-place finish in the regular season. Her 393 rebounds, a single-season UCF school record, were the second most ever pulled down by a C-USA player, and she also ranked fifth nationally in rebounds per game.
Entering her junior season, Cannon has 878 points and 654 career rebounds, leaving her just 122 points shy of becoming the 11th member of the UCF 1,000-point club and in third-place all-time in rebounds. Cannon has 33 career double-doubles.
Hughes, the two-time C-USA Player of the Year, is one of three individuals in league history to reap this honor multiple times. She enters her senior season with a chance to join UH's Chandi Jones (2002-04) as the lone three-time honorees.
Hughes is the active leading scorer in the conference and is on track to shatter the school points standard while also finishing as part of the winningest class ever at UTEP. The native of Southfield, Mich., already owns the program record for career assists and steals.
In only three years, Hughes has tallied 1,184 points, 449 assists and 223 steals. The effort already makes her one of just three players in the 14-year history of C-USA to register at least 1,100 points, 445 helpers and 220 thefts.
