IRVING, Texas -
CONFERENCE USA SHOOTING STARS (Friday, Nov. 27)
Memphis guard Brittany Carter scored a Conference USA and Memphis single game record 49 points in a 98-83 win over Sacramento State at the University of Washington tournament, Friday. She also had 11 rebounds for her second double-double of her young career. Carter's 49 points broke WNBA All-Star Tamika Whitmore's school record of 45 points against Arkansas State on March 17, 1999. It also better Cincinnati's Valerie King 46 points against Charleston Southern on Nov. 25, 2003. Alex Winchell, a former AAU teammate of Carter's back in Georgia, added a season-high 17 points and a team-high five assists.
Jareica Hughes became the program's all-time leading scorer as UTEP downed Weber State, 70-58, in the first game of the 2009 UTEP Thanksgiving Classic at the Don Haskins Center Friday evening. Hughes moves past former Miner Izabela Piekarska (1,251 points from 2004-08) and one of the school's all-time greats Be Stoney (1,249 from 1977-81). She now owns the school record for career assists (474), points (1,256) and steals (230), while rating second in free-throws made (295).
Ashley Clarke and Kelly Smith each scored 12 points to lead six East Carolina players in double figure scoring. The Pirates picked up a 95-57 win over Bethune-Cookman in the first game of the Lady Pirates Invitational. Chareya Smith added 11, while Crystal Wilson, Kim Gay and Celeste Stewart scored 10. The Lady Pirates are now 5-0 for the first time since the 1998-99 season. The 95 points scored were the most for East Carolina since Nov. 28, 2008 when it dropped 98 on North Carolina Central in last season's Lady Pirate Invitational.
Senior Chantelle Handy scored a game-high 22 points as Marshall defeated Miami Ohio, 83-76, at the Petersen Events Center in the Pitt Thanksgiving Tournament. Brittany Gilliam led a fast paced offense with a season-high 20 points as SMU defeated Hampton, 84-71, in the semifinals of the SMU Hoops for the Cure Tournament. This was the fifth consecutive game in which four Mustangs scored double-digits in points. Christine Elliott scored 13 points, followed by freshman Alisha Filmore and Haley Day each added 10 points in the win. SMU improved to 5-0 for the first time since starting the 1993-94 season with a 7-0 record.
