CONFERENCE USA SHOOTING STARS (Friday, Nov. 27) Jareica Hughes became the program's all-time leading scorer as UTEP downed Weber State, 70-58, in the first game of the 2009 UTEP Thanksgiving Classic at the Don Haskins Center Friday evening. Hughes moves past former Miner Izabela Piekarska (1,251 points from 2004-08) and one of the school's all-time greats Be Stoney (1,249 from 1977-81). She now owns the school record for career assists (474), points (1,256) and steals (230), while rating second in free-throws made (295). Ashley Clarke and Kelly Smith each scored 12 points to lead six East Carolina players in double figure scoring. The Pirates picked up a 95-57 win over Bethune-Cookman in the first game of the Lady Pirates Invitational. Chareya Smith added 11, while Crystal Wilson, Kim Gay and Celeste Stewart scored 10. The Lady Pirates are now 5-0 for the first time since the 1998-99 season. The 95 points scored were the most for East Carolina since Nov. 28, 2008 when it dropped 98 on North Carolina Central in last season's Lady Pirate Invitational. Senior Chantelle Handy scored a game-high 22 points as Marshall defeated Miami Ohio, 83-76, at the Petersen Events Center in the Pitt Thanksgiving Tournament. Handy was one of five players in double-digit scoring. Junior Tynikki Crook finished the game with 17 points while senior Alyssa Hammond had 16. Mystee Dale and Tania Walters scored 10 apiece.
Southern Miss placed four players in double figures as the Lady Eagles downed Jackson State in the opening game of the La Quinta Inn Lady Eagle Thanksgiving Classic. Tanesha Washington led the team with 23 points followed by Danielle Johnson with 17, Robin Murphy scored 11 and Pauline Love chipped in 11 to go with a game-high 19 rebounds. Brittany Gilliam led a fast paced offense with a season-high 20 points as SMU defeated Hampton, 84-71, in the semifinals of the SMU Hoops for the Cure Tournament. This was the fifth consecutive game in which four Mustangs scored double-digits in points. Christine Elliott scored 13 points, followed by freshman Alisha Filmore and Haley Day each added 10 points in the win. SMU improved to 5-0 for the first time since starting the 1993-94 season with a 7-0 record. Freshman guard Jala Harris scored 17 points to lead UAB to a 55-53 victory over the Norfolk State Spartans in the nightcap of the UAB Thanksgiving Classic at Bartow Arena. The Blazers held the Spartans scoreless for a 10:18 stretch and Harris sparked a 19-0 run during the span. Sophomore forward Tiffani Couisnard scored 11 points and pulled down five rebounds, and senior forward Larrissa Williams added 10 points, but it was not enough as Tulsa fell, 66-53, to Florida Gulf Coast in the FGCU Thanksgiving Classic Friday evening at Alico Arena.
