Southern Miss held off a furious comeback by Alcorn State to post a 69-53 win Friday night in Reed Green Coliseum. The Lady Eagles placed four players in double figures led by Pauline Love with 18 points and 16 rebounds followed by Tanesha Washington with 15 points, Erin Gatling had a season-high 14 points and Robin Murphy added a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. The Lady Eagles finished the game shooting a respectable 43.9 percent, after 53.9 percent in the first half, and held a 54-25 rebounding edge.
Four Green Wave players posted double-digit scoring totals, including a 15-point night off the bench by junior guard Tiffany Aidoo, as Tulane rallied to defeat Prairie View A&M, 67-63, Friday night in day one of the Big Easy Classic at Fogelman Arena.
The sophomore forward tandem of Jackie Stanley and Brianna Hypolite both scored 18 points to lead all players and pace Rice to a 71-47 victory over visiting UT Pan American in the opening game at the Owls' annual home tournament, the Gene Hackerman Invitational, Friday evening at Tudor Fieldhouse.
Senior forward Larrissa Williams scored 20 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead Tulsa to a 69-52 loss at Marist Friday evening at the McCann Center.
Timika Williams paced a quartet of Miners in double figures with a season-high 24 points but it wasn't enough as UTEP fell to Missouri State, 80-73, in the opening round of the 15th-annual Commerce Bank Classic on Friday afternoon.
