IRVING, Texas -
CONFERENCE USA SHOOTING STARS (Saturday, Dec. 5)
Jareica Hughes (12 points, eight boards, six assists), Dietra Caldwell (12 points, three boards, three helpers) and Ashley Milian (10 points, seven rebounds) led the way for UTEP's offense. Svilatlana Trukshanina emerged from a bit of a shooting slump by chipping in eight points off the bench, while Timika Williams grabbed nine hard-fought rebounds. UTEP posted a convincing 54-40 victory against Grambling State en route to earning third place in the 15th-annual Commerce Bank Classic.
Freshman guard Jala Harris delivered an outstanding performance, with 16 points, nine rebounds and nine assists, en route to UAB's 84-60 win over Mississippi Valley State at Bartow Arena. Her nine assists were a career high, while nine rebounds tied her career high. Along with Harris, three other Blazers (3-5) also scored in double figures, as junior guard Amanda Peterson had 14, senior forward Tamika Dukes put up 12 and freshman guard Amber Jones added 10.
Junior Tiffany Aidoo scored a career-high 17 points in her first start of the season as Tulane defeated Longwood, 73-58, in final day of the Big Easy Classic at the UNO Lakefront Arena.
Behind a career-high 32-point performance from junior guard Brittney Scott, Houston scorched North Texas, 104-65, at Hofheinz Pavilion. The victory marked the first time since a 106-54 win over Sam Houston State on Dec. 1, 2002, that the Cougars have surpassed the century scoring mark. The 39-point margin of victory was also the most for Houston since a 92-47 home victory over Saint Louis on Feb. 5, 2005. Five other Cougars reached double-figures in scoring - Courtney Taylor (14), Jasmine Johnson (13), Roxana Button (12), Brittany Mason (10) and Lesslee Mason (10). For Mason, the performance was her second double-double of the season as she added a career-best 14 rebounds
Kelly Smith led ECU with 11 points while
Ashley Clarke scored 10 but East Carolina (8-1) fell for the first time with a 57-45 decision at Gardner-Webb Saturday at Paul Porter Arena.
Sophomore forward Jackie Stanley scored 23 of her career-high 36 points in the first half and also grabbed a career-best 14 rebounds to lead Rice to a convincing 82-62 victory over visiting Sam Houston State in the championship game of the Owls' annual home tournament, the Gene Hackerman Invitational. Stanley's standout performance in the championship, along with 18 points and eight rebounds in the 76-60 win over UT Pan American Friday, made the Wylie, Tex., native an easy choice as the tournament's Most Valuable Player. Owl junior forward Morgan Mayse joined Stanley on the all-tournament team as Rice (2-6) won its second-straight game.
