Southern Miss Leads After Day One of C-USA Women's Golf Championship

EL PASO, Texas - On the strength of an even par 72 from Southern Miss sophomore Clara Viladomiu, the Golden Eagles hold a two-stroke lead after carding a 301 (+13) on day one of the 2008 Texas Roadhouse Conference USA Women's Golf Championship. A total of 44 golfers played 18 holes in Monday's opening round at the par 72, 6,294-yard Butterfield Trail Golf Club in El Paso, Texas, during a beautiful day that was highlighted by strong play from the league's underclassmen. Viladomiu, along with Tulsa senior Leisl Hasbrouck and UAB freshman Jamie Brabb all shot 72's on Monday to sit atop the leaderboard tied for first place. Golden Eagle freshman Virginia Espejo also had a strong opening day, firing a three-over-par 75 to help her team claim the first-day lead. Hasbrouck led all players with five birdies in round one. UCF, East Carolina and host UTEP are tied for second at 303 (+15). Freshman Jessy Tang was the top performer for the Knights as she shot an opening round 74 (+2), while ECU sophomore Abby Bools led the Pirates with a one-over-par 73. Bools sits in a tie for fourth individually, while Tang is tied for sixth. UTEP's Shang-Fan Huang was the Miner's low scorer, notching a three-over-par 75. The freshman led her team and tied for second on the day with four birdies. Sophomore Deborah Martinez also shot a 75 for the hosts and registered one of the day's two eagles. Tulsa (304) is alone in fifth place. Senior Michaela Cavener, a six-time C-USA Golfer of the Week, tied for eighth place with a 75 (+3), while junior Woori Shin tied for 14th after carding a four-over-par 76. UAB (306) is in fifth place, followed by SMU (308) in sixth. The Blazers were led by Brabb, while senior Lacey Jones paced the Mustangs with an opening round 74 (+2), good for a sixth-place tie. Jones shot the other eagle on the day along with Martinez. Defending champion Memphis (309) and Marshall (316) round out the nine-team field, respectively, in which just eight strokes separate the top eight teams. Memphis freshman Alexa Porter is tied for fourth place individually with Bools after her opening round 73 (+1). Marshall's top performer was sophomore Larie Lynch's four-over-par 76. Lynch is in a four-way tie for 14th place. Second round action begins at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday, with the final round teeing off at 8 a.m. on Wednesday.
