DALLAS (SMU) - With the collegiate season just wrapped up, SMU's women golfers have begun the summer qualifying season in style.

In local qualifying for the U.S Women's Open, a current Mustang, a former 'Stang and one incoming student-athlete advanced to the second round. At Canyon Creek Country Club in Richardson, Kate Ackerson tied for medalist honors with a 75, while sister and 2007 grad Jennifer Ackerson's 79 advanced her to second stage. Paige Martin, an incoming freshman, shot 80 to miss the cut by one, while 2007 graduate Ashley Deatherage carded an 81. In Fernandina Beach, Fla., incoming freshman Tia Gannon shot 76 at the Amelia National Golf Club to reach round two. Information on Martin's and Gannon's signings can be found here.

In U.S. Women's Pub Links action, Laura Cross returned to competition at the qualifier at Thorntree Country Club in Desoto and won medalist honors with a 77. The finals will be played at Kearney Hills Golf Links in Lexington, Ky., June 18-23.

"Kate has really stepped it up this year and has become a really good player," said SMU Head Coach Todd Selders. "That was Laura's first round of competition in 11 months and she looked as though she picked up right where she left off. Two USGA Medals in one week is pretty awesome."
