Quarterfinal #2 - (5) Colorado College 1, (4) UTEP
Nov. 5, 2008
Rice Track/Soccer Stadium - Houston, Texas - No. 5 seed Colorado College became the second team to advance to the semifinals of the 2008 C-USA Women's Soccer Championship with a 1-0 shutout of fourth-seeded UTEP.
Similar to the first quarterfinal match today, it was a defensive battle for most of the game. The Tigers got on the scoreboard when sophomore Ericka Baer took a long pass from defender Alexa Bannerman and headed in the game-winner.
The two teams, who tied for fourth place in the regular season standings, had also met in the championship quarterfinals the last two seasons. Colorado College won in 2006 and UTEP took the victory in 2007 and both matches were decided in double overtime. Today's contest looked as though it could have gone that way again as CC held just a light 12-11 advantage in shots and both teams had five shots on goal.
"I'm very happy with the result today," Colorado College head coach Geoff Bennett said. "Every game we play with UTEP is always a great game and both teams really fight. It is nice to be on the positive end and now we look forward to playing a very organized and talented East Carolina team."
Senior goalkeeper Geneva Sills and freshman keeper Caitlin Hulyo each took a half in the net for the Tigers to share CC's ninth shutout of the season. Sills was credited with three saves and Hulyo made two stops.
The Tigers improve to 13-6-2 and will play top-seeded East Carolina on Friday, Nov. 7, at 5 p.m. Central. The Miners fall to 13-7-1.
