Kelly Young Named Saint Louis Women's Soccer Assistant Coach

Kelly Young

The Saint Louis University department of athletics announced that Kelly Young will join the women's soccer staff as an assistant coach. The position was vacated by Janet Oberle who moved into an administrative role in the department of athletics as the director of compliance.

After a standout four-year career as the Billikens' sweeper from 1997-2000, Young gained coaching experience at Notre Dame High School. An assistant coach on the varsity girls' squad, she also coached the girls C team for two years before moving up to coach the JV girls squad in 2003. Young also spent the 2002 season coaching the JV boys team at John Burroughs High School and assisted with the varsity squad at the school as well.

As a Billiken, Young spearheaded a defensive unit that ranked among the nation's top 15 in goals against average in 1999 and 2000. She ended her career as one of the program's most decorated players, as she was a two-time All-Conference USA first team selection and was twice named to the NSCAA's All-Region team. In addition to her leadership on the field, Young was an inspiration to her teammates in the classroom, garnering NSCAA Scholar All-American honors her senior year. She graduated from the University with a degree in elementary education in 2001.

Oberle was named director of compliance after six seasons assisting with the women's soccer program. The only assistant coach the program has known, she was promoted to associate coach in the spring of 2003. On the sidelines, Oberle helped build a program that boasts eight NSCAA All-Region selections and 28 All-Conference spots, including Oberle who was a third-team All-Conference selection in the inaugural season of 1996.

Oberle received her bachelor's degree in civil engineering from Illinois in 1996 and earned a master's degree in urban affairs from Saint Louis in 1999. She currently is pursuing a doctoral degree in higher education at the University.
