Three Conference USA teams remain undefeated three weeks into the 2008 season. UTEP claimed the 2008 Sun City Invitational title to improve to 5-0-0. Colorado College (4-0-1) and Marshall (2-0-2) also remain undefeated. SMU's Caitlin Carter and Tulsa's Jennifer Kacergis became the second and third players, respectively, to register hat tricks in this young season, while leading their teams to victories.
PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Jessica Zavalza, Houston
Freshman, Forward, Santa Ana, Calif.
Zavalza made a resounding return to the Cougar lineup on Friday, scoring a pair of goals in Houston's 2-0 non-conference win over Louisiana Lafayette. Her goal in the sixth minute was her second game-winner in her last two games. Zavalza now leads the club with three goals and six points just three games into her collegiate career.
DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Aline Reis, UCF
Freshman, GK, Campinas, Brazil
Reis notched her third-straight shutout when the Knights blanked Pacific, 1-0, in California on Friday. The freshman amassed a season-high 10 saves against the Tigers. Staying in the Golden State, Reis collected five saves while playing 110:00 minutes in a 2-2 tie at UC Davis Sept. 7. Reis had a stretch of 366:30 where she did not allow a goal, and now has a 3-1-1 goalkeeping record with 30 saves on the year, which ranks first in Conference USA.
STREAKING STARTS
UTEP is off to a 5-0-0 start, with two tournament titles and four shutouts, just 12 days into the season. Ten different Miners have scored points and five have goals on the season, led by junior Tameka Sumter with a conference-best four goals. Colorado College remains unbeaten in its last five games. Second-half goals by sophomore forwards Tiffany Brown and Sydney Fetter fueled the Tigers in a 2-0 victory over Ball State Sunday to improve to 4-0-1. Marshall concluded the fourth annual Thundering Herd Nike Invitational with a 2-2 double overtime draw with Radford Sunday and played The Citadel to a 2-2 decision in Friday's first-round match. Sophomore F Missy Gordon netted goals for the Herd in both matches. Marshall is also undefeated this season (2-0-2) in four matches. Houston is riding a three-match win streak into the weekend, and the Cougars only loss was a 1-0 double overtime decision in the season opener.
UCF'S CROMWELL POSTS WIN No. 150
With Friday's 1-0 victory at Pacific, UCF head coach Amanda Cromwell earned her 150th career victory in 12 seasons as a collegiate coach. It also was her 130th win at UCF in the 10 years she has been at the helm of the program. Since joining Conference USA, she has led the Knights to two regular season titles in three years.
POWER OF 10
Eight different Golden Hurricane soccer players scored in Tulsa's 10-0 shutout of visiting Jackson State on Sunday afternoon. It is the second time TU has tallied double-digit goals (beating Southern by the same score) in just six games this season and is the only NCAA Division I team to do so this season. Junior Jennifer Kacergis recorded a hat trick for Tulsa, while Sarah Greene, Natalia Alatorre, Kelley Ricker, Brandi Neilson and Jessa Weekley all earned their first career goals. The TU defense did not allow a single shot in the match for the first time since Sept. 24, 2005. Even more impressive is that Jackson State led the nation with 3.59 goals per game in 2007.
TWO (HATS) BETTER THAN ONE
In addition to Tulsa Jennifer Kacergis' recording her first career hat trick, SMU senior F Caitlin Carter scored three first-half goals to lead the Mustangs to a 5-1 victory over Prairie View A&M at Westcott Field Friday night. Carter, who missed the first two games of the season, scored her three goals in just over 20 minutes - matching the total she had scored in her three previous seasons at SMU. In each of the last three games in which she has scored, going back to last season, Carter has scored the game-winning goal.
SHOOTING STARS
Junior F Anne Candee scored on a direct corner kick in the 88th minute to lift Rice to a 1-0 road victory against Oklahoma Sunday. It was her fourth goal of the season.
Colorado College sophomore GK Emma Bailey earned her second consecutive shutout performance in Sunday's 2-0 win against Ball State. She had made only two brief appearances as a freshman last season, playing a total of 38:16, before turning in 200 scoreless minutes this weekend.
East Carolina junior Jessica Swanson scored the game-winner in overtime to lead the Pirates to a 2-1 victory against UNC-Wilmington. The Pirates now lead the all-time series with UNC-Wilmington, the longest series in the program's history, 10-4-1.
Memphis sophomore Vendula Strnadova, the 2007 C-USA Freshman of the Year, tallied a goal and an assist in the Tigers' 2-1 victory over Ole Miss on Friday.
UCF had a season-high 20 shots against UC Davis, but the two teams battled to a 2-2 tie. It was the Knights' first overtime game this season.
UAB junior F Danya Barsalona led the Blazers with five total shots, including four shots on goal. She also scored a goal in UAB's 5-2 loss at No. 25 Kansas on Friday.
