C-USA NOTEBOOK CHARLOTTE Charlotte suffered a pair of losses at the Carolina Classic. The 49ers lost to top-ranked and defending national champion North Carolina, 5-0 and to Duke, 1-0. JENN HOWELL recorded nine saves against the Blue Devils.
CINCINNATI Cincinnati defeated Sacramento State and Cal Poly SLO each by the score of 1-0. Against Cal Poly, NICKIE LUSE had her second straight game-winning goal. Goalkeeper CHRISTY HOFFMAN had 11 saves in the two shutouts and is now second on C-USA's all-time list with 21.5 shutouts.
DE PAUL DePaul is off to its best start in school history (4-0) following victories over Valparaiso and Wisconsin-Green Bay. The Blue Demons have scored three goals in every match this season while posting two shutouts and two one-goal games by opponents. CHRISTY YOUNG is tied for first on the school's career assists list (seven) and is second with 10 goals and 27 assists.
EAST CAROLINA East Carolina suffered a 1-0 loss to No. 14 Maryland. Defensively, freshman GK LAUREN WOLFF had another solid performance for the Pirates, recording 10 saves on the day. East Carolina is at Richmond on Thursday.
HOUSTON Houston lost to SMU (2-1) and North Texas (3-0). Goalkeeper ROBIN CATE had nine saves against North Texas. SMU scored its game-winning goal with just 14 seconds left against UH. LINDSAY BEIRIGER had the lone Cougar score against the Mustangs.
LOUISVILLE No. 2 and defending national runner-up UCLA (7-0) and Miami (Ohio) (3-1) each dealt Louisville a setback. KRISTIN TAPP had the Cardinal goal against Miami. Louisville travels to Indiana on Thursday.
MARQUETTE Marquette ran its record to 3-1 with a 1-0 triumph over Central Michigan last week. KATE GORDON had one goal and one assist last week, while goalkeeper ASHLEIGH KOENIG had five saves against the Chippewas. The Golden Eagles hit the road to face Utah and BYU this week.
MEMPHIS Memphis lost to Evansville, 2-0 before downing Tennessee-Martin, 3-0. Junior forward ALI BAKER had a goal against Tennessee-Martin, while goalkeeper KATARINA WICKSELL posted three saves in the shutout.
SAINT LOUIS Saint Louis took No. 24 West Virginia to overtime before falling to the Mountaineers, 2-1 at the Virginia Classic in Charlottesville. JENNY KEHL provided the Billikens offense, while MEHGANN BURKE added 12 saves.
SOUTH FLORIDA South Florida defeated The Citadel, 7-1 and tied High Point, 1-1 at the Jacksonville Tournament. Midfielder STINE HAGH had two goals, while RACHEL THJOMOE posted three assists against The Citadel.
SOUTHERN MISS Following victories over Gardner-Webb and Arkansas-Little Rock, Southern Miss is off to its best start in the four-year history of the program (3-0). LESLIE SCHOEPLEIN has not allowed a goal in those three games, recording seven saves in the three shutouts. Junior forward TRICIA WILES and freshman forward LAUREN PREWITT lead the team with two goals apiece.
TCU TCU defeated Mississippi State (3-2) but lost to Ole Miss (2-0) at the UAB Nike Classic in Birmingham, Ala. JENNY SWANSON had a goal and two assists in the victory over the Bulldogs. This is the fourth goal of her college career, but the first that was not a game-winner.
TULANE Tulane's Sept. 9 match at Northwestern State was rained out. The Green Wave's next action will be Friday at the College of Charleston.
UAB The Blazers finished second in the UAB Nike Classic, losing to two-time defending SEC Western Division champion Ole Miss 2-1 in overtime, and then captured a 2-0 shutout over Mississippi State. ADRIENNE SUFFRIDGE collected a goal and an assist, both firsts for the season, in the win over the Bulldogs. Freshman TARA KIDWELL added her team-leading third goal in the match
C-USA TOURNAMENT The 2001 Conference USA Tournament will be held Nov. 7-10 at Valley Fields in Milwaukee. Marquette will serve as the host institution for the event. The championship, slated for 2 p.m. on Nov. 10, will be televised by the C-USA Television Network. SHUTOUTS When Cincinnati shut out Sacramento State, 1-0 on Sept. 9, Bearcat goalkeeper CHRISTY HOFFMAN moved into second place in Conference USA history with 21.5 shutouts.
