C-USA WOMEN'S SOCCER SHOOTING STARS (Friday, Oct. 9)
No. 16 UCF used 27 shots to take down the league's top offensive team UTEP, 3-2. The two teams traded goals until senior MF Becca Thomas scored the game-winner (her first goal of the season) off a penalty kick in the 55th minute. Sophomore GK Aline Reis made five saves.
Sophomore MF Brittany Vacca (Abilene, Texas) and senior F Tameka Sumter (San Antonio, Texas) scored for the Miners.
The Knights dedicated their match to local high soccer player Breanna McMahon, who was recently seriously injured in an accident which forced her left leg to be amputated. Donations were accepted at the UCF Soccer Complex to help her family.
Memphis junior F Ashley Berra (Cordova, Tenn.) scored both goals in a 2-0 shutout of Houston. Berra received help from freshman F Averi Hallman (Spokane, Wash.), who assisted on both goals tonight and now has a team-leading four assists on the season. Berra has posted 20 goals in her three years and climbs to fourth place in the ranks for career goals at Memphis.
Sophomore GK Elise Kuhar-Pitters (Spokane, Wash.) recorded four saves in her seventh shutout of the season (11th of her career) for the Tigers.
Memphis now has a total of eight shutouts this season, and the 2009 team now ranks tied for the second-most shutouts in a single season.
East Carolina freshman Caty Butler (Boerne, Texas) was credited with her second-straight game-winning goal with the lone tally in a 1-0 victory at Tulsa. Butler got the Pirates on the board early by scoring in the ninth minute. Classmate Berit Hansen (New Bern, N.C.) made five saves in goal, including one on a penalty kick in the first half, while recording her third solo shutout of the season.
Colorado College got timely goals from senior F Emily Beans (Griffith, Ind.) and junior MF Meredith Smith (Englewood, Colo.) to fuel the Tigers to a 2-0 victory over Southern Miss. Beans struck first with her fifth goal of the season and 29th of her career to move into the top 15 C-USA career goal scorers.
Marshall junior F Erika Duncan (Easthaven, Scotland) scored her fifth goal in the Herd's last four matches as Marshall defeated SMU, 1-0, for the first-ever win in series history. Duncan's goal came in the 86th minute on a rebound from an Erin Blakely (Westerville, Ohio) shot, to break the 0-0 tie.
Marshall senior GK Liz Orton (Ft. Collins, Colo.) tallied six saves and earned her eighth shutout of the season. She is one shutout away from breaking Marshall's single season record currently held by Ashleigh Woods (2001).
UAB junior Marie Yempuku (Honolulu, Hawaii) scored a goal in the 16th minute, followed by a goal by sophomore Tiffini Turpin (Birmingham, Ala.) in the 41st minute, to lift the Blazers to their second-straight league win with a 2-1 victory at Rice.
The Owls scored their lone goal of the contest in the 80th minute when junior MF Kate Edwards (Westlake Village, Calif.) passed the ball to senior Erin Scott (Richardson, Texas), who put it past the goalkeeper to bring Rice within one.
Another full slate of Conference USA action takes place Sunday, including a match where Rice will host Memphis. The game will be televised by CBS College Sports Network and shown on tape delay this Tuesday, October 13 at 7 p.m. Eastern/6 p.m. Central.
