Conference USA Women's Soccer Notebook-Oct. 15-21
Conference USA's top two teams meet Friday in Cincinnati when the Bearcats host Marquette. UC is on pace to break Marquette's C-USA single-season GAA record. Catch up on this and all of the Conference USA women's soccer news in this week's notebook.
PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
OFFENSIVE: Denise Peters, UAB
Sr., F, Jacksonville, Ala.
UAB's Denise Peters is the Conference USA Offensive Player of the Week for the period ending Oct. 14. Peters had one goal and one assist as the Blazers upended TCU and Houston last weekend. Her goal against TCU occurred with 57 seconds left, forcing the match into overtime. She had a UAB season-high six shots on goal.
DEFENSIVE: Ashleigh Koenig, Marquette
Jr., GK, Naperville, Ill.
Marquette's ASHLEIGH KOENIG is the Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week for the period ending Oct. 14. Koenig spurred the Golden Eagles to a pair of shutout victories over Charlotte and East Carolina, recording seven saves. Marquette and Charlotte were each undefeated in league play entering the Oct. 12 match and East Carolina ranked among the league's top three in goals and points per game.
CINCINNATI DEFENSE IS A BEAR
Through matches of Oct. 14, Cincinnati is on pace to break Conference USA's single-season GAA record. Marquette set the mark in 1997 (0.65), and Cincinnati is currently at 0.33.
TOURNAMENT SEEDING
Seeding positions for the 2001 Conference USA Tournament shall be determined on the final regular season league standing. Teams shall be seeded in descending order according to Conference USA points accumulated (2 points for a win, 1 for a tie and 0 fir a loss). Each team's point total is indicated in the standings.
C-USA NOTEBOOK
CHARLOTTE
Marquette snapped Charlotte's seven match unbeaten streak wit ha 1-0 win over the 49ers on Oct. 12. Charlotte bounced back with a 4-1 win at DePaul on Oct. 14. DAWN GEYER had two goals against the Blue Demons. The 49ers scored three goals in a 10 minute span to seal the win over DePaul. Charlotte hosts N.C. State on Tuesday.
CINCINNATI
Cincinnati ran its record to 9-3 overall and 5-0 in Conference USA with a 2-0 win at Saint Louis on Oct. 12. CHRISTY HOFFMAN stopped four shots for her seventh solo shutout of the season. Hoffman now has held opponents scoreless 26 times in her collegiate year and trails Chris Jones by one for second place on UC's all-time list. The Bearcats host Evansville on Tuesday.
DE PAUL
DePaul suffered a 4-1 loss to visiting Charlotte on Oct. 14. OGONNAYA DOTSON-NEWMAN had her fourth goal of the season to account for the Blue Demons' scoring. DePaul visits Louisville on Friday.
EAST CAROLINA
Following a 2-0 triumph at DePaul on Oct. 12, East Carolina suffered a 2-0 loss at No. 18 Marquette on Oct. 14. The Golden Eagles attempted 25 shots, compared to five for the Pirates. Goalkeeper LEIGH STEIGERWALD had nine saves against MU. East Carolina travels to High Point on Friday.
HOUSTON
Houston lost to UAB, 3-1 on Oct. 12 but bounced back to defeat South Florida, 2-1 in double overtime. LAURA REPP and KARA BULLINGER had the goals for the Cougars, while ROBIN CATE had seven saves. UH hosts Memphis this Friday.
LOUISVILLE
Louisville defeated Tennessee-Martin, 3-1 on Oct. 12 but lost at Saint Louis, 3-1 on Oct. 14. AMBER JOLLEY had the Cardinals' lone goal against the Billikens. Louisville hosts DePaul and Marquette this weekend.
MARQUETTE
No. 18 Marquette recorded a pair of C-USA shutouts last weekend, knocking off Charlotte (1-0) and East Carolina (2-0). ANNE IODER and KATE GORDON provided the Golden Eagles' offense against ECU, as Marquette's victories came against two of the top four teams in the league. Gordon leads Marquette with five goals and 13 points. ASHELIGH KOENIG recorded seven saves in goal over the last two matches.
MEMPHIS
Memphis suffered a pair of losses to Tulane and Southern Miss last weekend. Tulane managed a 1-0 win as the only goal scored was by a Memphis defender in her own goal. Nine of the Tigers' 15 matches have been decided by one goal. Memphis travels to Houston and TCU this weekend.
SAINT LOUIS
For the first time this season, Saint Louis used a three forward rotation and scored three goals in a 3-1 victory over visiting Louisville. Freshman JAMIE PERRY had two goals in the match's first 12 minutes. Perry has two of SLU's three C-USA game-winning goals this season and four game-winners overall. Seven of Saint Louis' 12 matches have been decided by one goal. SLU takes its 6-6 overall mark and 3-3 league ledger to North Carolina this weekend when it meets Charlotte and ECU.
SOUTH FLORIDA
South Florida suffered a pair of one-goal losses to Houston (2-1 in double overtime) and TCU 4-3. ALEIA LONG, LAURA TUCKER and CHRISTINE KOESTER each had a goal for the Bulls against TCU. VALERIE WETZEL had nine saves against Houston. USF visits Tulane and Southern Miss this weekend.
SOUTHERN MISS
Southern Miss posted its first Conference USA win of the season with a 2-1 victory over Memphis on Oct. 12. LEILA McREYNOLDS had a goal and an assist against the Tigers. TRICIA WILES also had a goal, and she leads the team with eight goals and two assists (18 points) this weekend. The USM defense allowed Memphis just one shot on goal in the first 45 minutes. Southern Miss hosts UAB and South Florida this week.
TCU
TCU defeated South Florida, 4-3 on Oct. 12 but lost to host UAB, 2-1 in double overtime on Oct. 14. UAB snapped TCU's four match winning streak. TCU is 5-2 in one-goal matches this season. The Horned Frogs return to action Sunday against Memphis.
TULANE
Tulane bounced back from a 4-1 loss to Wake Forest on Oct. 12 with a 1-0 victory over Memphis on Oct. 14. This was freshman goalkeeper SARA SIMPSON's fourth shutout in the last six matches. Her 76 saves put her third on the school's single-season and career saves list, and she needs 20 saves over the last five matches to set the school single-season mark. The Green Wave hosts South Florida and UAB this weekend.
UAB
UAB ran its winning streak to four matches after defeating Houston, 3-1 and TCU, 2-1 (double overtime). DENIS PETERS, the Conference USA Offensive Player of the Week, had the game-tying goal with 57 seconds left in the TCU match. Goalkeeper LISA NOWOSLAWSKI had nine saves in the two matches, including two key stops in the first overtime against TCU. She has an .851 save percentage this season. UAB visits Southern Miss and TCU this weekend.
C-USA TOURNAMENT
The 2001 Conference USA Tournament will be held Nov. 7-10 at Valley Fields in Milwaukee. Marquette will serve as the host institution for the event. The championship, slated for 2 p.m. on Nov. 10, will be televised by the C-USA Television Network.
