It was another good night for the home team as five hosts picked up wins and the other played to a tie. Memphis won its third straight, and extended its streak to 11 games without a loss, with a 4-0 shutout of Southern Miss. With the win, the Tigers along with UCF have secured a berth to the 2007 Conference USA Women's Soccer Championship Nov. 7-11 in El Paso, Texas. Memphis 4, Southern Miss 0 Senior defender Caroline Barrett sparked the Memphis offense to a 4-0 victory over visiting Southern Miss during Senior Night for the Tigers. U of M honored all five seniors Barrett, Isabel Briones, Elaine Sedgewick, Harumi Someya and Halley Jo Sullivan after the game. Barrett scored the first goal of the match for Memphis at the fourteen minute mark. She scored the goal off of her own corner kick, to give the Lady Tigers a 1-0 lead. Her shot was deflected off of the keepers hand and right into the goal. Barrett took seven corner kicks in the first half. She earned Lady Tiger of the game honors, for her performance tonight. Midway through the first half, junior midfielder Emiko Schwab scored her sixth goal of the season as she connected on an assist from Barrett to knock the ball into the goal. Schwab later tallied an assist as she helped in Ashley Berra's goal, which came off of a free kick. Memphis finished the game with one more goal as Laura Laufenberg, connected off of a cross from Amanda Olszewski to net one in about five yards out. Sarah McFadden tallied two of the Lady Eagles four shots in the contest. Colorado College 2, East Carolina 1 Freshman forward Tiffany Brown scored with just 4:33 left in regulation Friday, lifting Colorado College to a key 2-1 C-USA victory over East Carolina at CC¹s Stewart Field. With the triumph, the Tigers climbed into a three-way tie with ECU and Rice in the league standings, each with 3-2-1 records in conference play with three games remaining. Colorado College improved to 8-4-3 overall while the visiting Pirates dropped to 9-3-3.
Brown, who was robbed by ECU goalkeeper Amber Campbell on twoprevious occasions, finally cashed in with the game winner after Lisa Balsama re-directed a long free kick by Molly Uyenishi to her. The tally was Brown's sixth of the season, as well as her team-leading third game winner. CC's Emily Beans and the Pirates' Bailey Wilcox traded goals just 18 seconds apart midway through the first half. Beans converted on a rebound after Campbell made a diving save on Brown's point-blank shot from inside the box. Wilcox tied the contest moments later, on a sprawling header of a long feed from Jessica Swanson. SMU 2, Rice 0 Junior Caitlin Carter converted a crossing pass from senior midfielder Allison Brill into her second goal - and second game-winning goal - of the season to lift SMU to a 2-0 victory over Rice. The Mustangs improved to 6-7-1 on the season and 2-5-0 in Conference USA games, while the Owls dropped 9-5-2 overall and 3-2-1 in C-USA games. The teams battled through a scoreless first half before Carter put the Ponies ahead to stay. Brill crossed a free kick from close to the right corner flag to Carter, who fired a shot from eight yards out in the 56th minute. The Mustangs got an insurance goal in the 77th minute when senior forward Kimber Bailey stole the ball and threaded a long lead pass through the Owls' defense to senior forward Brittainy Vice, who beat Rice goalkeeper Meghan Erkel inside the left goalpost. Junior SMU goalkeeper Ashley Gunter turned aside all seven Rice shots on goal to notch her third shutout of the season and 21st of her career. With one more shutout, she will pass Becca Lief and tie Kim Kyle for the third-most shutouts in SMU history. UAB 2, UCF 0 UAB won its fourth consecutive game and improved its record to 8-6-1 overall and 4-2-0 in Conference USA by defeating UCF, 2-0, Friday evening at West Campus Field. The Knights, who were in first place in the league standings going into Friday's contest, saw their record move to 10-3-3 and suffered their first loss in conference play (5-1-1) at the hands of the Blazers. After going into halftime tied at 0-0, the Blazers put the first score on the board in the 53rd minute when sophomore Danya Barsalona headed in a goal to put UAB on top, 1-0. Barsalona, who tallied her seventh goal of the season, was assisted by seniors Jenny Meyer and Sally Palmer. The match went over 30 minutes without another score until Palmer nabbed her seventh score of the year in the 85th minute to increase the Blazers' lead and make the final score 2-0. Fellow senior Jill Porto was credited with the assist on Palmer's goal. UAB had eight shots in each half to edge out the Knights, 16-11, in the shot category. The Blazers also tallied nine shots on goal compared to UCF's five. Palmer led UAB in shots with five, including three on goal. Porto was close behind with four and Barsalona added three. UCF was paced by Courtney Whidden, Hanna Wilde, Brianna Schooley and Danielle dos Santos with two a piece. Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Kate Blankenship earned the win in the net for the Blazers, which also marks her seventh shutout of the year, by grabbing three saves against the Knights. Jennifer Manis received the loss in goal for UCF, allowing two goals and recording seven saves. UTEP 2, Marshall 1 (ot) Senior forward Jami Tullius scored twice, including a golden goal 1:03 into overtime, to lift the UTEP soccer team to an emotional 2-1 victory against Marshall on "Senior Night" at University Field Friday evening. Tullius, one of the five seniors on the squad honored prior to the match, helped her fellow classmates go out in style. By virtue of her two-goal effort, Tullius became the first Miner in program history to eclipse the 100-point barrier. She now has 103 career points. UTEP improves to 10-6-1 on the campaign, including 4-2 in Conference USA action. It marks the school-record sixth season with at least 10 victories. GK Jessica Salvi made two saves for the Orange and Blue, including a crucial stop with 58 seconds to play in the match. Marshall Netminder Liz Orton registered 10 saves, as she was busy from the onset of the match. Orton broke her personal best single-season saves record of 79. Thus far for the season, Orton has a total of 84 saves with three season games remaining. The Miners out-shot the Thundering Herd, 21-9, and took eight corner kicks compared to just two for Marshall. UTEP came out with plenty of energy, earning a corner kick the first minute of the match. The Miners were unable to convert on the opportunity, however, as the ball was cleared out of danger. Tullius vied for the match's first tally on the ensuing possession. Her blast was collected cleanly by Orton. The play proved to be crucial, as the Thundering Herd vaulted to a 1-0 lead only minutes late when a long clearing pass led to a breakaway for Molly Snead for re fourth goal of the season. She laced a shot that snuck past a diving Salvi, putting UTEP in an early hole. The Miners did not rattle, as they quickly pushed the ball back into the Marshall portion of the pitch. Sophomore Tameka Sumter blocked a pass by the Thundering Herd defense and sped in alone on net. Orton came off her line to cut down the angle, which helped her deny the sophomore. The ball deflected out of bounds for another corner kick, but UTEP was unable to capitalize until the Tullius equalizer. Houston 0, Tulsa 0 (2ot) Tulsa and Houston battled to a double-overtime 0-0 tie Friday at the Hurricane Soccer and Track Stadium. TU moved to 3-12-2 on the season and 1-5-1 in Conference USA, while the Cougars snapped a seven-game losing streak and own a 4-9-2 overall mark and are 0-5-1 in the league. Sophomore Stephanie Johnson led the Golden Hurricane attack with six shots, four of which were on goal, while classmate Jennifer Kacergis attempted five shots in the contest. Tulsa out-shot Houston, 18-8, including an 11-3 ratio in shots on goal. Junior goalkeeper Kendall Harclerode tallied three saves, while the Cougars' Shelby Scott earned 11 saves in the contest. |
