Fifteen C-USA Women's Soccer Players Earn Academic All-District Honors

IRVING, Texas - A record 15 Conference USA women's soccer players were named to the CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America) ESPN the Magazine All-District teams on Thursday. To be eligible for Academic All-District honors, student-athletes must hold at least a 3.3 grade point average and be a sophomore in academic and athletic standing. The 15 selections are the most in league history, surpassing last year's record of 13 student-athletes.

2009 C-USA Academic All-District Honorees

Rice led C-USA teams with three selections to the All-District squads. Senior forward Erin Scott was placed on the District VI first-team for the third consecutive year and was joined by senior defender Katelyn Ostendorf. As first-team selections, Scott and Ostendorf are now eligible to earn NCAA Academic All-America honors in women's soccer later this year.

Scott owns a perfect 4.0 GPA as a double major in psychology and pre-med, while Ostendorf maintains her 4.0 GPA in biochemistry, cell-biology and pre-med. Classmate Shelly Wong also received honors on the District VI third team as an economics and managerial studies major.

UTEP had two honorees in District VI, as junior midfielder Melissa Desilets joined Scott and Ostendorf on the first team. The Edmonton, Alberta native holds a 4.0 GPA in chemistry. Her Miner teammate Chelsea Winbush earned All-District accolades on the District VI third team.

UAB's Danielle Blair was also named to the District IV first team. The senior defender is a four-year starter for the Blazers and has maintained a perfect 4.0 GPA in industrial distribution, management and marketing.

Junior midfielder Vendula Strnadova of Memphis received first team honors and became the fourth Lady Tiger in program history to receive first team accolades. The Las Cruces, N.M., native was named to the second team last season and holds a 3.9 GPA in exercise and sport sciences curriculum. Teammate Kelsey Bakker all garnered All-District honors as the junior was named to the District IV second team as an accounting major with a 3.9 GPA.


 

 

Emily Beans represented Colorado College on the District VII team as the senior forward earned first-team honors. The Griffith, Ind., native owns a 3.6 GPA as a biology major.

Southern Miss placed sophomore Amy Davis and junior Jana Mason to the District VI second team alongside Mackenzie Ayer of Tulsa. Tulsa's Courtney Chadney also earned All-District honors as the senior midfielder was placed on the third team.

Rounding out C-USA women's soccer All-District honorees are Marshall's Kristen Berquist and Amanda Malkiewicz of East Carolina. Berquist earned District II second-team honors as an accounting major and has been a key factor in the Herd defense. Malkiewicz was named to the District III third team as a math education major with a 3.9 GPA.
