East Carolina Earns Top Seed at 2008 Women's Soccer Championship

IRVING, Texas - East Carolina clinched the top seed in the Conference USA Women's Soccer Championship, which will be hosted at the Rice Soccer & Track Stadium in Houston Nov. 5-9, with a 3-2 double overtime victory against Marshall on Friday. With the win, ECU became the first C-USA team to go undefeated in conference play since Charlotte in 2002. ECU finished 7-0-4 in the conference and is 12-3-4 overall. Eight of the 12 C-USA teams advanced to the conference tournament, which begins this Wednesday with first-round matches at noon, 2:30 p.m., 5:30 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. CST. The semifinals are Friday at 5 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., with the final set for Saturday at 1 p.m. (CST). The final will be aired on CBS College Sports, with the quarterfinals and semifinals streamed through C-USA's All-Access package. Conference USA's official website, www.ConferenceUSA.com, will also provide live stats, game recaps, box scores and photos. The Pirates share their first regular season title with defending champion Memphis, who finished at 8-2-1, but ECU won the tie-breaker to earn the No. 1 seed. ECU will meet eighth-seeded SMU (6-12-1, 4-7-0) in the noon match to kick off the championship. The Pirates picked up a 2-1 victory against SMU on Oct. 12. No. 4 seed UTEP (13-6-1, 6-4-1) and No. 5 Colorado College (12-6-2, 6-4-1) will square off the in the 2:30 p.m. match. The pair tied for fourth place, but UTEP won the tie-breaker with a 2-1 win in Friday's regular-season finale. The two teams have met in the first round of the C-USA Championship since Colorado College joined the league as an affiliate member in 2006. The Tigers won the 2006 match-up, 2-1 in double overtime and advanced to the championship. Last season, they also battled into a second overtime period but UTEP picked up the 3-2 victory. The 5:30 p.m. match pits second-seeded Memphis (12-4-2, 8-2-1) against No. 7 UAB (7-10-2, 5-4-2). The Tigers beat UAB, 2-1 on Thursday to share the C-USA regular-season title for the second year in a row. Memphis will be looking to repeat as the conference tournament champ, and UAB won the title in 2006. Host and No. 6 seed Rice (10-8-0, 6-5-0) squares off against No. 3 seed UCF (12-4-3, 7-2-2) in the nightcap at approximately 8 p.m. The Knights enter the C-USA Championship on a four-match winning streak, but their last loss was to Rice on Oct. 17, 2-1, in double overtime. UCF and Rice also met in the 2007 C-USA Semifinals, where UCF earned a 1-0 victory.
