The UAB women's soccer team aims to advance to its first Sweet 16 in school history when the Blazers meet host and No. 11 national seed Tennessee on Sunday at 2 p.m. at the UT Soccer Complex in an NCAA second-round matchup.
The Blazers (16-5-1) shutout Wake Forest on Friday night, 2-0, in their inaugural NCAA Tournament game and extended their school-best winning streak to eight games. UAB has now won 12 of its last 13 games and recorded its eighth shutout of the season versus the Demon Deacons. UAB jumped on Wake Forest early in the match on Friday by scoring both goals in the first 10 minutes of the match to seal the win.
Tennessee (16-4-2) also earned a 2-0 shutout on Friday as the Lady Volunteers blanked Furman to win for the 14th time in their last 16 games. The Lady Vols will look to earn their third-straight berth in the Sweet 16 with a win on Sunday. UAB and Tennessee will face off for the first time in regular-season play on Sunday. The Blazers posted a 4-0 shutout over the Lady Vols last season in exhibition play.
Sunday's match will feature two top-notch defensive clubs, as Tennessee has allowed more than two goals in a match just four times this season while UAB has allowed more than single goal on just six occasions. The Blazers have out-scored the opposition, 29-5, during their current winning streak.
UAB's offense is led by 2004 Conference USA Offensive Player of the Year Tara Kidwell, who is the school's all-time leader in goals, points, and assists. Kidwell owns 14 goals this season along with eight assists. Fellow senior Jenny Rynders has contributed 11 goals, while true freshman Jill Porto is third on the team with eight.
With a win, UAB will advance to play the winner of Detroit-Ohio State on Nov. 19-21.
