Conference USA produced four of the 33 women’s soccer players that were named to the ESPN Academic All-America team, it was announced today by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). DePaul’s Erin Walter was joined by Jamie Perry and Kara Kornfeld of Saint Louis and UAB’s Briana McCarty on the three-team squad. To qualify, student-athletes must hold at least sophomore status, own a minimum grade-point average of 3.2, and be either a starter or key reserve for their team.
Walter, a third team selection, finished the 2004 season with a school-record 10 assists. Her 18 points on four goals and 10 assists were third on the team. The midfielder was also named third team All-Conference USA. In 57 career matches, Walter ranks among the top five in school history with 27 points on eight goals and 11 assists.
Perry earned second team Academic All-America status after three Academic All-District selections. She is a four-time All-Conference selection and the program's all-time leading scorer. With 104 career points (41G, 22A), Perry is one of just five players in Conference USA history to eclipse the 100-point plateau. She also holds the school record for career goals and ranks second in school history in career assists. Perry was second on the team this season with 20 points (7G, 6A).
Kornfeld, a third team selection, was the only returning defensive starter on a unit that led C-USA and ranked among the nation's top 10 in goals against average and shutout percentage. The team matched the school record with 13 shutouts this season, including a 1-0 decision over Louisville to advance to the Conference USA Tournament final for the second-consecutive season. With eight of those shutouts coming in league play, Kornfeld helped deliver the program's second C-USA regular-season title in nine seasons.
McCarty, a second team honoree, was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-America team for the second-straight year. McCarty was a member of the third team last season. A First-Team All-C-USA selection this season, she helped lead the Blazers to their first NCAA Tournament appearance in school history this season, as UAB advanced to the second round before falling to Tennessee, 1-0. She was named Defensive MVP at the C-USA Tournament, leading the Blazers to the tournament title. McCarty finished her career second all-time in career assists with 24.
