Four C-USA Players Earn NSCAA Scholar All-America Honors
CHICAGO- For the first time in Conference USA women's soccer history, four players have been named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America/adidas Scholar All-America team. Marquette senior DIANA DETRIE and Cincinnati senior NICOLE LUSE were each named to the second team, while Golden Eagle teammate ERIN MAYSENT and UAB's DENISE PETERS were third team honorees.
Conference USA has the most NSCAA/adidas Women's Scholar All-America selections of any Division I league. All 33 players will be honored at the All-American luncheon, which will be held on Jan. 19, 2002 in conjunction with the NSCAA Convention at the Philadelphia Marriott Hotel.
Detrie was a Third Team All-Conference USA selection after helping the Golden Eagles to a 16-6-0 overall record and their third straight NCAA Tournament appearance. The defender, a Green Bay native, boasts a 3.74 GPA in accounting and helped Marquette finish second in the league in both goals allowed (15) and goals against average (0.68). She also had one goal and one assist on the year.
Luse, a senior nursing major with a 3.43 GPA, also earned Third Team All-Conference USA laurels after posting a career-high four goals and three assists. The senior tri-captain was also named Most Valuable Midfielder at the Conference USA Tournament, as the Bearcats tied C-USA's single-season victory record (20) en route to the league's first-ever NCAA Sweet 16 appearance. UC advanced to the Sweet 16 by upending No. 7 Notre Dame, 3-2, in South Bend on Nov. 18. This marks the highest, nationally-ranked opponent that a Conference USA program has ever defeated. It also ended Notre Dame's 39-match home winning streak.
Maysent is a junior midfielder who owns a 3.9 GPA in English/Economics. The Ames, Iowa, native finished her third MU fall with two goals and one assist for five points. She played a pivotal role in helping Marquette make its sixth straight Conference USA Tournament finals appearance.
Peters, who carries a 3.85 GPA in psychology, helped the Blazers make their first Conference USA Tournament semifinals appearance since 1997. Peters was named First Team All-Conference USA after finishing among the league's top 10 in shots per game (eighth, 2.30), points per game (fourth, 1.10) and goals per game (sixth, 0.45).
