No. 20 Houston picked up the league's first win over a ranked opponent, shutting out No. 11 Oklahoma State, 3-0, Saturday and improved to 3-0 with an afternoon win over Sam Houston State. UTEP, Marshall and UCF also remained undefeated, combining to post a 5-0 mark during Saturday contests. In all, Conference USA teams combined for a 10-4 mark Saturday and are 19-6 so far in 2012.
Conference USA softball teams combined to post an 8-2 record during the first Friday of the 2012 season. The rain-filled day saw the cancelation of five contests. Marshall and UCF both won two games, while UTEP also improved to 2-0 on the season. UAB notched a season-opening win over Massachusetts, 3-2, courtesy of a walk-off home run from sophomore Kristen McGrath. East Carolina split a pair of games at its own Pirate Classic and Houston blanked Texas A&M Corpus Christi at the Hilton Houston Plaza Classic.
UTEP broke out the bats early and never looked back during its opening game of the 2012 season, blasting Santa Clara, 11-3, in five innings. Chelsea Troupe led off the bottom of the first inning with a solo home run and starter Cynthia Villastrigo struck out six for the win. First baseman Camilla Carrera went 4-for-4 with two runs batted in a two runs scored in her return after missing the majority of last season with a back injury.
The 2012 C-USA softball season begins Thursday when UTEP hosts Santa Clara at 3 p.m. MT at Helen of Troy Softball Complex. Preseason All-CUSA selection Chelsea Troupe (.404, 31 RBI, 37 runs, 14 HR, .885 SLG) will lead the UTEP attack along with senior Camilla Carrera, the 2011 C-USA Preseason Player of the Year and 2010 first-team all-conference selection, who returns after missing the majority of last season with a back injury.
