IRVING, Texas - Camilla Carrera of UTEP is this week's Conference USA Softball Hitter of the Week after hitting .833 with one double, a home run and three RBI to lead UTEP to its first-ever conference series sweep. The freshman slugged 1.500 against UAB and scored seven times. Houston's Angel Shamblin is the Pitcher of the Week after tallying three victories including a win over No. 21 Fresno State. The Davie, Fla., native did not allow a run or a walk in 25.0 innings of work and struck out 38 hitters, including 15 against Texas. The 15 K's tied the school and conference records she set last season.
HITTER OF THE WEEK (3/10)
CAMILLA CARRERA - UTEP
UT, Fr., Laveen, Ariz. (Moutain Pointe)
Carrera batted .833 against UAB over the weekend, leading the Miners to their first-ever conference series sweep in program history and just their fifth conference series win overall. The freshman was 5-for-6 at the plate and slugged 1.500 against the Blazers. She scored seven runs for the Miners and drew three walks. She did not strike out in six at bats and contributed to UTEP's 48 doubles, posting one. Carrera was 1-for-1 in stolen bases. The Arizona native scored two or more runs in every game against UAB including three runs in the final game of the series, her most impressive game. She reached home three times and went 2-for-2 at the plate, including a long ball. Carrera also knocked in two runs while drawing to walks in the finale. This is Carrera's first career weekly honor.
PITCHER OF THE WEEK (3/10)
ANGEL SHAMBLIN - Houston
P, Sr., Davie, Fla. (Hollywood Christian)
Shamblin went 3-0 while tossing three complete games including a 3-0 win over No. 21 Fresno State. The senior did not allow a run or walk in 25.0 innings of work and struck out 38 hitters, including 15 against Texas. The 15 K's tied the school and conference records she set last season. Shamblin had double-digit strikeouts in all three games and moved to 11-1 this season in the circle. The Davie, Fla., native came in and pitched 4.0 innings of relief in the Cougars' second game against Texas, striking out two and allowing no runs. Her 0.54 ERA this season is best on the team. She also hit .368 over the weekend with seven hits, including two doubles and 5 RBI. For her efforts Shamblin was named the MVP of the Bingham Toyota Classic. This is Shamblin's 11th career weekly honor, her second in 2008 (Feb. 18).
