Two Saint Louis Softball Players Earn Verizon Academic All-District Honors

Saint Louis University seniors Nicole Bohnenstiehl (Lebanon, Ill. / Lebanon) and Beth Yagge (Belleville, Ill. / Belleville West) today were selected to the 2003 Verizon Academic All-District VII SoftballTeam. To be eligible for the award, student-athletes must be at least a sophomore in academic standing with a cumulative grade point average over 3.20 and are starters or important reserves. Bohnenstiehl and Yagge now are eligible for the Verizon Academic All-America Softball Team.
Bohnenstiehl, a biomedical engineering major, finished her three-year SLU career holding every pitching record in the Billiken record book and is the school's all-time leader in home runs (14), RBI (69) and doubles (32). This season, she led the team in hitting (.298), RBI (21) and home runs (six). In the pitching circle, Bohnenstiehl finished with a school-record 18 wins with a 1.21 ERA and 262 strikeouts versus just 23 walks in 203 innings of work. She was chosen All-Conference USA in each of her three years as a Billiken and twice earned the C-USA Commissioner's Academic Honor Roll.
A physical therapy major, Yagge started all 39 games this season at first base and helped the Billikens to their best record since 1987. She finished third on the team with a .261 batting average with four doubles. Yagge finished second on the team with 12 RBI and scored 10 runs. She completed her career ranked fourth in school history with 140 hits and in runs scored with 59. Yagge ranks second in program history with 30 doubles and fifth all-time with 52 RBI's. She was a 2002 Verizon Academic All-America third-team selection and is a three-time winner of C-USA Commissioner's Academic Medal.
The Billikens finished the year 21-18 overall, 9-14 in Conference USA. The Billikens' winning record was the first for the program since 1987 and set a record for most league wins.
