Marshall Women's Tennis Completes Second Day of the East Regional Championships

NORFOLK, Va. - The Marshall women's tennis team completed the second day of action, Saturday at the Wilson/Intercollegiate Tennis Association East Women's Regional Championship hosted by Old Dominion University. During play Friday, Marshall's senior Jeanne Schwartz (West Palm Beach, Fla.) was the lone Thundering Herd to compete but was defeated by Maryland's Adela Matejkova, 6-3, 6-3, in the singles qualifying final round. "Our goal is to play solid games from beginning to end," Marshall head coach John Mercer said. "We hope to accomplish our goal during play tomorrow." In the doubles round of 64, Marshall's duo sophomore Thaddea Lock (Bristol, England) with freshman Isabell Raich (Klaus, Austria) defeated the 12th seeded Darthmouth pair of Scott/Zebroski, 8-5. Then the Herd duo defeated Army's Flach/Houghton, 8-5, in the doubles round of 32. Lock/Raich will compete in the doubles round of 16 at 8 a.m., Sunday. Marshall's No. 3 seeded juniors' duo Kellie Schmitt (Pittsburgh, Pa.)/Karolina Soor (Lindesberg, Sweden) defeated Pittsburgh's pair of Adams/Borza, 8-2, also in the doubles round of 64. Schmitt/Soor then defeated West Virginia's Lyskawa/Percival, 8-5, in the doubles round of 32. The No. 3 seeded duo will begin Sunday play at 8 a.m. in the doubles round of 16.
